So it’s official. Twenty-three year old South Florida artist Will Brennan is the latest to sign to Steve Aoki’s DIM MAK label after the success of his breakout project, Prodigal Son.  Congrats to the homie who we’ve been rocking with since day 1.  This is the first step in Florida being put on the map when it comes to good Hip-Hop music.  In celebration of the new signing, DIM MAK has put together an exclusive mix showcasing Will’s lyrical talent over some electronic beats.  Vibe got the exclusive premier for the mixtape stream with DIM MAK releasing the download for this project sometime tomorrow.  Also, you can check out Steve Aoki announcing the signing at his recent stop in South Florida at Club Cinema.  Once again, big ups to the homie Will Brennan!  Big things coming from Will in 2013.

Sir Michael Rocks Confirms That There Won’t Be Anymore Cool Kids Album

in this interview with AHH, Sir Michael Rocks confirms that him and Chuck Inglish have moved on from The Cool Kids and that there won’t be anymore albums from them as a group. Read an excerpt of the interview below:

AllHipHop.com: I think last time you talked to AllHipHop.com, you said you wanted to put Shark Week to the side and wanted people to focus on the solo work which, like you said, have been doing. But I think it’s fair to wonder about the future of The Cool Kids as a group because of the precedent you set as a duo. Chuck’s beats are heavy in demand, and you’ve been getting downloads on your solo work as well, but is there the chance of another Cool Kids project down the line, whether that be Shark Week or something different?

Sir Michael Rocks: No [laughter]. I don’t think it’d be “The Cool Kids”; I don’t think we’re gonna come out again as The Cool Kids. We might come together as something else different, but as The Cool Kids, no, because we’re not the same people, we’ve changed and evolved into two different artists. We can’t come back and do the same thing again, you know? We’ll probably do something else, but as The Cool Kids and asShark Week, no, those ideas are done, and we’re on to something different now. I wouldn’t do that; I think that would be a step backwards to go back and do that right now, so as far as I know for now, no I wouldn’t see us doing another Cool Kids project as “The Cool Kids”.

Maybe we come up with a different name and add a different member to the group; maybe add a couple different members to the group for something like that. Maybe I’m making all the beats, and Chuck is doing something else. Maybe somebody else is making all the beats, and we rap on the beats, you know what I mean? As The Cool Kids and the same idea we already instituted? No, we would never do that. We’re way too creative and way too smart for that, because everything gonna happen and everybody’s like, “Awww, there it is, all over again. The Cool Kids they did this already.” We don’t want to be like doing the same thing over again. I think we’re a little bit smarter and a little more creative than all of that.

I partially agree with Mikey Rocks.  They’ve been on hiatus for way too long and I don’t know how I would feel if they dropped a Cool Kids album that didn’t live up to everyone’s expectations.  You can definitely hear the progression in Mikey’s music in his past 4 tapes and I enjoy the beat tapes Chuck has been putting out.  At first I wasn’t a fan of Lap of Lux, but eventually, that tape grew on me and now there’s not a day I don’t bump it.  And the concept of adding different members to a possible new group sounds like a fun idea.  Now that Mikey has put ths talks of a Cool Kids reunion to rest, we can hopefully hear him get more involved with the JetLife crew.  You can read the FULL INTERVIEW WITH MIKEY ROCKS here.

Doobies to FSD for the heads up.

Wrathmatics – A Charlie Brown Beat Tape [Album + Exclusive Interview]

Posted by & filed under Featured, Mixtapes. Leave a comment

Written by Adam E. Smith (@theadamesmith)

The final month of the year brings with it the last efforts of artists trying to punctuate their 2012 catalog with statement moves on records before hibernating in the studio for he first portion of Winter. Or, artists are getting crafty and dropping some sort of thematic concept piece that balances their audible signature with seasonal sonic identifiers such as the always important holiday music. Nyle Bay aka Wrathmatics is a noteworthy for falling into both of those categories at the same time with his fully reimagined production take on Charles M. Shultz’s Peanuts. The tribute mixtape is dedicated to all things that the Peanuts represented during this time of year, while also offering up patterned accents and completely unexpected instrumental reconstruction.

The quintessential holiday piano sections are left intact, but subtle percussion and layered tempos make this original approach the type of record that can spin it’s way into personal nostalgia, or serve as the soundtrack for your holiday adventures. The 24 year old Wrath has been grinding out production tapes for the last four years in his homebase of San Jose, California, which coincidentally is within close proximity to where Charles M. Shultz spent he final years. As a result, his production has found its way through the underground, and its pet projects like A Charlie Brown Beat Tape that signify the young producer has the proper range to make name for himself in the elite beat sphere.

Beyond how fresh it will be to have a Charlie Brown hip-hop tape to bump during holiday gatherings, the entire project’s proceeds will go towards Wrath’s fund for Adopt-A-Family. You can name your price at purchase, so give as much as you can, and be sure to check our exclusive interview with Wrath about the project below.

J. Cole – Louis Vuitton

This track originally appeared on Fabolous’ The Soul Tape 2 as a collab between the two, but today, J. Cole decided to unleash an extended version of the track. This is also one of my favorite cuts on the tape, so hopefully this is a preview of what to expect from the upcoming J. Cole album.

Pac Div – GMB [Album Stream]

Posted by & filed under Albums, Featured. Leave a comment

After releasing a slew of dope singles in the past couple of weeks, Westcoast’s Mibbs, Like and Be Young known collectively as Pac Div return with their new LP, GMB, yesterday. I haven’t personally listened to the full album yet besides the tracks that they leaked themselves, but from what I heard from friends, the album slaps just as much as their last album The Div. I’ve added a album stream uploaded by one of our Chiefers for your listening pleasure.  The album includes features from Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller, Blu and more.  And if you’re fuckin’ with it, head over to iTunes and cop the album with their grandma donned on the cover.
